The Scoot Shop raises scooter awareness and money for the arts

by Anthony Bento, of Sacramento Press, published on September 20, 2009 at 9:52PM

The Scoot Shop at 1619 E Street hasn't been around for a year yet, but it's already developed a reputation as a Midtown magnet within the Sacramento scooter subculture.

"There's a big scooter community in Sacramento, and there hasn't been a home [for that community]," said Scoot Shop co-owner Rebekah Spurgeon.

Judging by the crowd of enthusiastic scooterists in attendance at the Scoot Store, it appears the community has found a home.

The store, a cross between a large garage and a small aircraft hangar, holds dozens of scooters and a vast array of scooter equipment. And on Saturday night, it held the first annual Scooter Jamboree, a two-day event that included a meet and greet and a charity ride through Sacramento on Sunday morning.

The meet and greet included live music, fire dancing, a charity auction and an art show featuring the work of Casey Sachen, a Chicago-based photographer.

Sachen's show is a montage of images taken at scooter rallies throughout the United States. "I've been a scooterist for years, and I felt it was really important to document the rallies. ... It's a subculture that we should know about," Sachen said. The photographs, which include images taken at Sacramento-area rallies, will be on display at the Scoot Shop until mid-October.

The scooter community represents every demographic. "It's across the board, from college-aged to retirement," Spurgeon said. "Some want to be in the scene, some want an economical mode of transportation."

A woman nicknamed "Bodacious" by her friends at the Sacramento chapter of the Royal Bastards Scooter Club explained that within a few years of beginning to ride scooters, she had abandoned large vehicles. "Honestly, I've gone camping with just my scooter," she said.

When she first purchased her scooter, what surprised Bodacious, she said, was the community. "I did not realize there was a whole scooter culture," she said. Like many of those at Scooter Jamboree, she now attends regional events, such as Amerivespa, and community rides with organizations such as the Royal Bastards.

Proceeds from the Scooter Jamboree were donated to the Sacramento-based T&M Organization for the Arts. T&M representative Shiree Cano said her group provides art and music at afterschool programs for children and young adults.

Sacramento RT to unveil proposed fare increases

By Tony Bizjak
tbizjak@sacbee.com

Published: Friday, Jun. 5, 2009 - 12:00 am | Page 4B

Just months after raising rates, Sacramento Regional Transit is poised to do it again.

A tentative plan to hike some fares in September will pose a double blow to riders of the region's largest bus and rail service.

The agency had already announced plans to make cuts on as many as half its bus routes this September to reduce costs amid the worst budget crisis in its history.

That turned out not to be enough, officials said this week. So, RT will unveil proposed fare increases Monday that could affect as many as 40 percent of the system's passengers.

"This is, no question, the most difficult financial situation we've ever found ourselves in," RT General Manager Mike Wiley said. "It's almost like a never-ending story."

The agency's latest money woes are again tied to the state budget crisis and the down economy. With many state workers furloughed, fewer riders are buying monthly passes, opting instead to buy daily tickets and 10-ticket booklets, causing bus company revenues to drop.

To counter that, RT officials are looking at raising the basic ticket price from $2.25 to $2.50. All-day passes would go from $6 to $6.50. Ticket booklet prices also would go up.

The basic monthly pass will remain at $100. Student and senior stickers also would not increase.

Officials, however, say they are considering eliminating the agency's free pass for riders over age 75, or raising the age to 85.

RT Board Chairman Steve Cohn defended the move, saying there are few options.

"We don't print money, and we can't look to anybody else to save us," he said. "We feel like we already are bare bones."

The bus cuts and fare hikes should help close a $9 million deficit, officials said. The agency also will continue salary and hiring freezes, and reduce service contracts.

The news of potential fare hikes along with bus cuts came as a jolt to riders.

North Sacramento's Jennifer McSweeney, who is disabled, already has seen her monthly government assistance dwindle.

"We get less money, less service, and we have to pay more," she said. "It just doesn't go together."

Celina Hermann, a mother of five at the Mather Community Campus, may lose her weekend bus, No. 75, which she uses for doctor and dentist appointments.

"We need that bus," she said. "My kids' little legs can't make it up that hill to light rail."

If the No. 83 bus is eliminated weekdays, Yvonne Lunsford, a medical facility receptionist, figures she'll have to take two buses with long walks in between to get to work.

"It's like the buses are just disappearing from the neighborhoods," she lamented.

Barbara Stanton of RiderShip for the Masses said she wonders if RT has done enough scrubbing of their staffing and contract costs.

"They say they are doing everything they can internally, but I don't know," she said.

RT head Wiley said agency staff is down to 1,060 from an allotted 1,200, and will drop to 1,000 next year.

He said he believes drastic cuts are temporary.

"There is a pent-up demand and a desire for service to be much greater than it is," Wiley said. But, for now, "it's about weathering the storm."

The RT board will hold a budget hearing at 6 p.m. Monday at the agency's 29th Street headquarters. A second public discussion is set for June 22

Update on Symba for california

In a posting dated May 22, Carter Brothers' (the US SYM distributor) California sales representative responded to mounting inquiries about the status of the Symba for California. Below are his comments:

Wow! Or should I say, “WoWOW!” What great feedback we are getting about the newest addition to the US SYM family, the SYMBA! Many dealers sold out their stock the first day they had them and have ordered more. It’s no exaggeration that this IS the biggest thing to hit the 2-wheel market this season, maybe even in the past few seasons.

We’ve had a lot of interest from fans in the state of California, both dealers and customers and I wanted to share our most updated info from the guy who is definitely keeping track of it all in California, our Regional Sales Manager, Ken Maurus. Ken is a veteran in the motorsports industry and definitely knows the ins and outs of the CA requirements. So, instead of me paraphrasing, I’ll post his update as he shared it with an interested California SYMBA customer:

Thank you for your inquiry and interest in the new SYM Symba. I am the Regional Sales Manager for SYM here in California.

As you are probably aware, California has more stringent emission requirements for vehicles than do the other states or the federal government (EPA).

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is the agency which sets those standards, reviews emission and other test results submitted by manufacturers and, if all goes well, certifies a specific vehicle to be compliant and therefore eligible to be brought into California and offered for sale. This certification comes in the form of an Executive Order issued by CARB, and is separate from certification given by the EPA. However, an EPA certificate is required before a vehicle can be submitted to CARB.

The Symba received its EPA certification in late March, 2009.

Once that certificate had been issued, we could then start the CARB testing, which is winding up right about now. Once all the tests have been completed and the test vehicle has passed, an application is prepared and submitted to CARB, which has 90-days to act upon that application.

What this all means is that we do not anticipate being able to offer the Symba for sale in California until late summer 2009.

The Symba is creating a great deal of interest and excitement throughout the country, and we’d like nothing better than to be able to offer it for sale in California right now. The rules we have to follow don’t allow that.

I hope this explains the situation to you. If you wish to check in now and then for an update (Suzanne’s note: keep checking this NEWS page), please feel free to do so.

Thanks again for your interest,

Kenneth Maurus

SYM Citycom 300
The SYM Citycom was a real surprise for us. One day we were moaning, the next day we were smiling. It was our usual rant. Scooters are convenient etc but why on earth do they have to be so damned wimpy? For a while now we’ve been harping on about it. It’s not just the maxi scooters that keep getting lambasted. It’s the full size models too. I imagine it’s because for a while now manufactures have been stuck on 200 or 250cc models. Well finally the dam has broken. 300cc is the new black. I wonder how people ever rode 200cc models now. It seems 300cc strikes the perfect blend between power, size, weight and economy. The latest crop of 300cc models from all of the various manufactures are all light years better than bikes from just twelve months ago. The Citycom just blew us away.

It’s almost the perfect scooter. It has plenty of storage; it rides well and comes from a quality manufacturer. Of all the bikes we’ve tested it makes the most sense. If you need to ride on the freeway or do some long distance riding there really isn’t a better scooter for anything like the money you can buy a Citycom for. It’s the price that really makes the Citycom standout. In some markets it’s actually half the price of competing models…half. Think about it. The Citycom 300 is simply the best value full size scooter on the market today. Forget all the technical guff; just take it for a test ride. You’ll see what we’re on about. For a human being living in a city on this planet, it just makes sense.

New Sacramento business owners take leap in risky time

Published: Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009 | Page 7B

Side-by-side on a stretch of Sacramento's E Street sit two vastly different businesses with something encouraging in common: They're opening.

Opening a business always carries risks, especially in rugged economic times, but Grateful Dog, a day care for dogs, and the Scoot Shop, a scooter shop, are confident they can fly.

2B13SCOOTNEW.JPG

"It's definitely unnerving, but I think it's a strong choice," said Robert Espinosa, who, with his wife Tammy Zimmer, owns Grateful Dog day care and boarding at 17th and E streets.

"We had a good business plan, good research. That kept us positive, telling us that this is going to work," he said. Though the retail portion of the business is open now, the boarding section is set to to open in mid-February.

Rebekah Spurgeon, who, with husband, Theron, opened the Scoot Shop in December in a renovated auto repair garage, also sees opportunity amid today's economic struggles.

The Spurgeons say they wanted to create a resource for the city's scootering community but also target a newer commuter – the loft dweller and the urban resident searching for a more fuel-friendly way to get across town.

"The whole idea behind riding a scooter is lifestyle and (making) a practical choice. Especially with the downturn in the economy, people are looking for economical choices," Rebekah Spurgeon said.

Andy Rosten, who owns the building that houses the Scoot Shop and Grateful Dog, said he was convinced that both could make a go of it in a down economy after hearing their business proposals.

"Both are unique to downtown," said Rosten, who owns a general contracting company.

Grateful Dog is leasing 8,000 square feet from Rosten for $5,100 a month, or about 64 cents per square foot. The Scoot Shop has about 6,300 square feet of space for $3,150 monthly, or 50 cents a square foot.

The two stores add to the neighborhood's retail mix. Next door is Midtown Furniture Gallery and a Midas auto shop.

Inside the Scoot Shop, rows of gleaming scooters face each other on the cement floor, from retro-looking Vespas to sleek models from Taiwanese manufacturer SYM, whose prices begin at $2,300.

The couple had hopes of owning a business after Theron, now a captain in the Army reserve, separated from active duty.

Theron's uncle, who owns scooter dealerships in Michigan, planted the seed a couple of years ago while the couple were stationed in Colorado. The idea began to grow when they returned to Sacramento, where Rebekah was born.

"We looked at different cities and markets – Denver, Minneapolis – and they had scooter dealerships. But there wasn't one in midtown" Sacramento, Theron said.

Concern over higher gas prices have helped boost scooter sales nationwide. Several stores in the Sacramento area sell the vehicles, which can get as much as 100 miles per gallon or more. Hot Italian, a cafe and clothing store opening soon at 16th and Q streets, plans to sell vintage Vespas.

At Grateful Dog, crews are putting finishing touches on a spacious boarding facility behind the retail floor.

"We really wanted (to be in) midtown," said Espinosa, who has managed and owned similar boarding businesses in the Bay Area and Sacramento.

Espinosa will offer cage-free boarding and play areas, private kennels and even small suites for dogs. Rates run from $30 for day care to more for overnight boarding.

The Espinosas believe Grateful Dog is the only facility like it in midtown, though Wag Hotels, which bills itself as a luxury pet hotel that also offers boarding and doggie day care, has a nearby location in West Sacramento.

Espinosa declined to say how much the couple has invested in the business but said they turned real estate and other investments into start-up capital and a rainy-day fund.

"This is just me and my wife, so it's been challenging, but we were approved (by the city) last month, so we're on the road," Espinosa said.

They have one more goal: to move to the neighborhood once the business is up and running.

"We wanted to work for ourselves, live in the community and work in the community," Espinosa said.

12/22/08, The Scoot Shop Goes to the IMS Show

This past Sunday, the staff of The Scoot Shop attended the annual International Motorcycle Show in San Mateo. Dozens of manufacturers and vendors were on hand with their latest bikes, gadgets and gear. We were eager to spend some time with the Fulmer helmet guys and talk about their newest designs and all the features that make their helmets some of the best on the market today. We are proud to announce the addition of Fulmer to our helmet line up and are excited to be able to provide such an excellent product at an incredible value to our customers. Fulmer is the second largest seller of helmets in the US today. Their helmets come in a variety of styles and colors, all are DOT approved and several are SNELL approved, as well. We had the opportunity to see a demonstration of Fulmer's new Flamethrower technology reflective helmet. Awesome safety feature!

We also checked out Mad Maps. These handy maps contain 25-35 road trips per map and are available by region or city all over the US. Mad Maps used local MAD scouts to come up with the best scenic roads in their area, plus the funkiest places to stop along the way. Detailed turn-by-turn directions make your trip a breeze. Great for rallies, day rides or short scoots. These maps are perfect for scooterists that want to get out and explore their world.

As the day wound to a close, we hooked up with the crew from Scoot Magazine inside the Scooter Pavilion. They were already planning their 2009 Buyers Guide for Spring '09.

All in all, it was a good show. Maybe we'll see you there next year.

Scooters FAQ

Q: Can my Scooter keep up with traffic?

A: The bigger scooters (over 125cc) have no problem keeping up, at any speed below 55 mph. You'll lose a little acceleration if you carry a passenger or if you are climbing a hill. The smaller scooters may have some trouble keeping up with fast traffic. You really shouldn’t have any problems riding even 50cc scooters in The Grid (Sacramento Midtown/Downtown).
